Safety and a Festival TentCamping is a cheap and fun way to get away from the bricks and mortar of our homes but going back to basics doesn't mean that it is risk free. If you adopt a few simple common sense rules though, you can make life under canvas quite safe. No naked flames in the tent. This should be an absolutely non-negotiable rule. Tent and sleeping bag fabrics can easily catch fire and tent blazes can be fatal, spreading from tent to tent through camping grounds with ease. Keep your smoking outside and never use a match or lighter instead of a battery powered or wind up torch. Do not use aerosols, gas canisters or solvents inside the tent. Again this should be a cast iron rule. Despite being made of only thin material the tent is an enclosed space. Solvent fumes and aerosol gas can easily overcome someone inside a zipped up tent. Both are also highly flammable and the risk of combustion is high. Use a stick of deo instead of a can, don't try gluing the soles back on your boots inside the tent and always ensure that your cooking is done in an open and well ventilated outside area. Choose your pitch with care. When it comes to pitching your tent, making sure that the area is clear with no nasty stones under the groundsheet can save you the agony of kneeling on one in the middle of the night. Be careful with your poles, pegs and guy ropes. Poles, ropes and pegs can be dangerous if you fool around with them and you certainly don't want to kick off your festival weekend with an injury or hurt someone else due to your carelessness. Assemble poles on the ground first, put in your pegs with a proper mallet and don't place your guy ropes' anchor pegs too far away from your tent. Tie a strip of white cloth half way down each guy rope to alert others to their location. A few things such as these and you'll avoid hitting yourself, jabbing or tripping up another fellow music lover. Keep things tidy. A tidy tent makes it less likely that you're going to accidentally put your hand down on something sharp, nasty or breakable. Don't leave food leftovers or your rubbish around the entrance. Dispose of it as you generate it. Keep all sharp knives accounted for and together in a tin in the cooking area of your pitch. General. Just using some common sense in your festival life under canvas can make for a much safer but just as excellent a time - a huge party, plenty of concert sets and a holiday all rolled into one great summer break.
